Growing up as the daughter of a Book Binder, one of my favourite smells has always been the smell of the library and paper. So it's so special to me to spend time with the boys at the library and surrounded by books. We got Landon his first library card when he was not even a year old yet. We have a huge tote that we frequently fill up with 30-40 books to borrow - anything from board books, early readers, picture books, junior non fiction, to now chapter books. The ones that we borrow over and over again, I love to buy for Christmas and birthday gifts so we can have them to read over and over again. Here are some of our favourites!
The Wild Robot
by Peter Brown
This novel is a bit advanced for Landon's reading level, so I loved reading this one aloud to the boys. Roz the robot finds herself living on an island among wild animals and learns to be wild herself. We laughed and teared up through this one. You will want to read the second one after this to find out what happens next!

Press Here
by Herve Tullet
Both the boys have loved this interactive book during their toddler years. The imagery is simple and the author invites the reader to "press here" and follow other simple instructions to have a super fun interactive experience. Don't miss this author's other interactive books as well!

Dragon Masters: Rise of the Earth Dragon
by Tracey West
This is the first book in a series of novels perfect for primary kids. Follow along with Drake and his friends as he becomes a Dragon Master and goes on all kinds of adventures with his dragon. We have read all the books so far in the series and are awaiting the next one.

The Invention of Hugo Cabret
by Brian Selznick
This book is too advanced at this stage for Landon to read, so we loved reading this one at night aloud together. It follows an orphan boy named Hugo who lives inside the walls of a train station as he tries to solve the mystery of a spell-binding mystery. This book looks huge at first look, but it is full of really great illustrations to help tell the story.

Magic Tree House: #1 Dinosaurs Before Dawn
by Mary Pope Osborne
This is the first in a series of early chapter books that Landon loves. They combine history, fantasy and time travel as you follow Jack and Annie on their adventures in their magic tree house. We started with me reading this series to Landon and now he reads these aloud to Ried and I.

The Caboose Who Got Loose
by Bill Peet
There was a point in time when Landon was OBSESSED with trains, and that's when this book joined our collection. Since then it has been read dozens of times and is a favourite around here. Katy Caboose is tired of being last on the train and dreams of a different life. Then one day her wish comes true when an accident happens that leads to the peaceful life she always wanted.

Moo, Baa, La La La
by Sarah Boynton
Something about this book just makes toddlers love it! It was first recommended to me in several mom groups, so it was one we added to our shelf when Ried was born and it has been well loved. He loves making the silly animal noises and "reading" the words along with me now.

The Scarecrow
by Beth Ferry
I just love this story about an unlikely friendship. Everyone is scared of the old, weathered scarecrow. But one day he does something unexpected - he saves a baby crow. They soon become inseparable, until the baby crow grows up and flies away. The scarecrow stands in the field heartbroken through the long Fall and Winter until the crow returns in the Spring with a surprise.
