Raising Tadpoles: Meet Kermit and Constantine
During the start of Lockdown 2020, we wanted to get an up close look at the metamorphosis from tadpole for frog. We took a trip to a local pond, scooped up these two critters, and observed their metamorphosis from April until June. It was amazing to walk by them and see an arm popping out or their head changing shape. As you can see, nearly every day you could see a change in them.
Their food source in our home was boiled lettuce or spinach that I cooked ahead of time and froze in small batches. Their tank needed cleaned a couple of times a week, and needed enough water to swim around and a place to rest against for air or climb onto once they started growing arms and breathing with their lungs.
Once tadpoles grow all four legs and become froglets they require more protein for food so it’s a good time to let them go back into the pond. So we returned these two back to their home to complete transition to adult frogs. This was such a cool way to learn together about the frog life cycle!
